Abstract: Children with colorectal disorders such as Hirschsprung’s disease require structured bowel management to achieve social continence. Our research group was the first to validate sonographic measurement of the transrectal diameter (TRD) in these children as a radiation-free alternative to X-ray. Our studies show that a TRD greater than 3 cm correlates as a sensitive marker of stool retention. The method is suitable for follow-up monitoring and can be integrated into routine clinical care.
