Abstract: Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the stability of methane hydrates was first analyzed as a reference system. Subsequently, the guest molecules were 'loaded' or replaced by different combinations of cations and anions of monovalent salts. The primary aim was to determine the stability criteria for the so-called 'salty clathrates', whose thermodynamic stability was investigated as a function of pressure, temperature and ion size. MD simulations also provided an understanding of the formation and decomposition kinetics of the 'salty clathrates'.
