Abstract: Oxygen deficiency (hypoxia) is a common stressor in aquatic environments and mitochondria are major targets of hypoxia and reoxygenation stress as hypoxia instigates the collapse of the electron transport. Evaluating the response of mitochondria to hypoxic stress is essential in understanding the mechanisms associated with hypoxia tolerance and intolerance. This study focused on the physiological and molecular mechanisms of responses to H/R stress in hypoxia-tolerant and intolerant animals and identified potential adaptive mechanisms associated with hypoxia-tolerant mitochondrial phenotype.
