Abstract: Riverine nutrient export is mitigated by the filtering function of coastal systems. The study focuses on the Oder River outflow to the Baltic Sea, analysing nutrient concentrations, transformation processes and fluxes over a seasonal cycle and along the land-ocean continuum. The data indicate high nutrient retention, supported by long water residence times and shallow depths, as well as nutrient recycling and sediment-water interactions. Thus, retention processes in the Oder outflow are crucial for altering and subsequently removing riverine nutrients, which counteracts eutrophication.
