The thesis focuses on risk factors for dementia, with the aim of the work being to
identify and better understand risk factors for the prevention and early detection
of dementia. Four studies were conducted to achieve this. These studies analyzed German
health claims data and data from the Dutch Lifelines cohort study. The studies deal
with the identification of risk factors, the role of diabetes in the relationship
between education and cognition, and the development of dementia risk over time subsequent
to a diagnosis of diabetes or depression.

Die Dissertation thematisiert Risikofaktoren von Demenz. Ziel der Arbeit sind die
Identifikation sowie ein besseres Verständnis von Risikofaktoren zur Prävention und
frühzeitigen Erkennung von Demenz. Dazu wurden vier Studien durchgeführt, die deutsche
Krankenkassendaten und Daten der niederländischen Lifelines Kohortenstudie analysierten.
Die Studien beschäftigen sich mit der Identifizierung von Risikofaktoren, der Rolle
von Diabetes für den Zusammenhang von Bildung und Kognition und der Entwicklung des
Demenzrisikos im Zeitverlauf nach einer Diabetes- bzw. Depressionsdiagnose.
