This dissertation investigates Diurnal Warm Layers (DWLs), which are thin, buoyant
layers that form on the surface of the ocean on days with weak surface wind due to
heating by the sun. Based on high-resolution models, the interplay of DWLs with surface
waves and fronts is investigated. The impact of rain, cold pools and wind bursts on
the ocean surface layer is analysed and feedback mechanisms with the atmosphere are
highlighted. DWLs are shown to significantly modify the distribution of momentum,
energy and tracers in the ocean and impact on the heat flux exchange with the atmosphere.

Diese Dissertation untersucht Diurnal Warm Layers (DWLs), dünne, leichte Schichten,
die sich bei schwachem Wind an der Ozeanoberfläche aufgrund der Erwärmung durch die
Sonne bilden. Mit hochaufgelösten Modellen wird das Zusammenspiel zwischen DWLs, Oberflächenwellen
und Fronten untersucht. Die Auswirkungen von Regen, Cold Pools und Windböen auf den
Ozean werden analysiert und Rückwirkungen auf die Atmosphäre untersucht. Es wird gezeigt,
dass DWLs einen signifikanten Einfluss auf die Verteilung von Impuls, Energie und
gelösten Stoffen im Ozean und den Wärmeaustausch mit der Atmosphäre haben.
