Abstract: Self-control is the ability to wait for a preferred reward. This study explored self-control and its relationship with personality and social behavior in two sessions involving 48 female domestic pigs at 7 and 14 weeks of age. It was the first to show that self-control develops in pigs during this early stage of life. There were either no significant correlations or only weak tendencies between self-control and personality or social behavior. These findings could contribute to support long-term improvements in the behavior and welfare of farm animals.
