Abstract: COPD affects nearly 10% of the German population and is associated with a severe impairment of health-related quality of life. As a treatment of last resort, surgical lung volume reduction may be considered. In this study, quality of life was assessed by questionnaire preoperatively as well as 3–6 and 6–12 months after surgery. The study demonstrates an improvement in quality of life in more than 70% of patients within the first postoperative year, with the strongest effect observed in the domain of psychosocial impact. In addition, predictive factors influencing outcomes were identified.
