Abstract: Epidural analgesia (EA) is an established method for postoperative pain control after major abdominal and thoracic surgery. Postoperative urinary drainage during EA is inconsistent; due to concerns about postoperative urinary retention (POUR), urinary catheters are often kept until EA is stopped. This study assessed the safety of early catheter removal during ongoing EA. Retrospective and prospective randomized data showed no increased POUR risk, but fewer catheter-associated UTIs and better patient comfort with early removal.
