Abstract: This thesis compiles research efforts aimed at advancing the understanding of microplastics pollution from a data-driven perspective. Regarding data production, it includes the development of a water sampler and a guideline of modular laboratory protocols for the purification of microplastics. Data assessment is covered by studies on method validation, a concept for analytical interlaboratory comparisons, and contributions to data management. Finally, data utilisation is demonstrated through applications in pollution assessment, modelling, and spatial predictive mapping using machine learning.
