Abstract: Bacteria of the phylum Bacteroidota were investigated for their propionate production capacity. Compared to eight other species, B. propionicifaciens and B. graminisolvens produced the highest propionate concentrations. Using a pH-controlled fed-batch method, the propionate titer could be further increased. Initial attempts to improve propionate production using genetic engineering by overproducing the methylmalonyl-CoA mutase in P. vulgatus were explored, and propionate-producing Bacteroidota strains were isolated from environmental samples and then characterized .
