Abstract: The aim of this dissertation was to investigate brain structure and glucose metabolism changes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) in order to more accurately describe their correlations with patients’ motoric, cognitive or behavioural characteristics. The findings from the studies presented here illuminate multiple aspects of heterogeneity among patients with ALS and PLS in addition to improving our understanding of the neuroimaging correlates of specific phenotypic characteristics in those patient groups.
