Along the Baltic Sea coast, coastal protection structures protect municipalities in
the face of rising sea level and increasing frequency of storm surges. However, the
extent of these effects on coastal ecosystems are mostly unknown. This dissertation
investigated which of the following aspects of the ecosystems are altered by coastal
protection: sediment characteristics, nutrient concentrations, turbidity and biodiversity.
The results show that all coastal protection measures have an impact on the coast,
however, the impacts differ dependent on the coastal protection structure used.

Entlang der Ostseeküste schützen Küstenschutzstrukturen die Gemeinden angesichts des
steigenden Meeresspiegels und der zunehmenden Häufigkeit von Sturmfluten. Das Ausmaß
dieser Auswirkungen auf die Küstenökosysteme ist jedoch weitgehend unbekannt. Diese
Dissertation untersuchte, welche der folgenden Aspekte der Ökosysteme durch den Küstenschutz
verändert werden: Sedimenteigenschaften, Nährstoffkonzentrationen, Trübung und Biodiversität.
Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass alle Küstenschutzmaßnahmen Auswirkungen auf die Küste
haben, die Auswirkungen sich jedoch unterscheiden.
