Abstract: This study explores, for the first time on the basis of oral history interviews, the role of psychiatric welfare workers in the GDR. The findings reveal a field of tension between patient-centered social support and state control. Welfare workers assisted people with mental illnesses in everyday life, while at the same time participating in surveillance and involuntary admission practices. The study therefore highlights the contradictions of psychiatric welfare within the context of the GDR’s “welfare dictatorship.”
