Abstract: The article uses a newly investigated corpus of a total of 2,467 Abitur essays written between 1949 and 1989 at two extended secondary schools in the GDR to shed light examination practices to shed light on examination practice with regard to the written Abitur essay in German in terms of topic and assessment practice. A systematic evaluation of the herein processed examination tasks with regard to the examination items named therein and their categorization and classification in a diachronic development is in the focus here. In addition, a first look is taken at the performance evaluation carried out by the teachers, in which both, the four partial grades and the overall grade determined on their basis, are taken into account. Here, clear differences in the frequency with which certain partial grades are awarded become apparent, as does a tendency to improve the average grade for the year. From the initial conclusions, further research desiderata are derived. Thus, it is demonstrated to what extent the pending intensified research of the corpus can contribute to the further differentiation of today's picture of the GDR school education system.
