Abstract: The article analyses the assessment criteria for the final exam essay in the subject of German Language and Literature in the GDR, tracking its development from the 1950s to 1989 and offering insights into the surrounding discussions. The article highlights focal points of the debates on both the educational policy and administrative levels, as well as in practical application within schools. Based on the documents evaluated, it demonstrates how assessment guidelines evolved through interactions among stakeholders at various levels of the educational system. Furthermore, the discussions reflect that despite efforts to enforce uniform, objective standards, subjective assessment margins persisted, requiring teachers to constantly balance objectivity with pedagogical discretion.
