This thesis discusses a new time measurement system, called BOUNCE, and is based on the delay of electromagnetic signals on the internal wirings of integrated circuits. A significant feature of BOUNCE is that it can be implemented on cheap, of-the-shelf standard hardware. In the experiments, a prototype was already able to yield a time resolution of 4.2 ps at a precision of +/- 10 ps. Further considerations indicate that the obtained resolution of 4.2 ps is not a limit, since the resolution does not depend on gate delays and/or the on-chip package density of active elements. |
