Abstract: Controlled hypotension (CH) is an established method to reduce intraoperative bleeding. The aim of this animal study was to compare the influence of the herefore most frequently used agents sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and esmolol (ES) on hepatic perfusion and oxygenation. In comparison to SNP, ES leads to a significant constraint of systemic and hepatic makrohaemodynamics while the measurement of liver surface pO2 does not show any advantage for either one of the two substances with respect to the hepatic microcirculation.
