Abstract: Conditions for the formation of pairs of solitons in fibers are analyzed in this thesis. An analytic model based on perturbation theory is developed to describe the interaction of adjacent solitons. The perturbative treatment is applied to two relevant cases. The first case deals with Raman-shifting soliton trains. Conditions for an equilibrium of forces acting on the solitons are derived. This is shown to be unstable. The second case are soliton molecules previously demonstrated in optical fibers with alternating dispersion. With a perturbation model the binding mechanism of such stable structures is revealed.
