Abstract: The success of future synchrotron radiation sources and high power IR free-electron lasers (FELs) largely depends on the development of an appropriate electron source. At the moment, the superconducting radio frequency photoinjector (SRF gun) seems to be a promising approach to achieve the required brightness and the high average current at the same time. Within the present thesis a SRF gun was brought into operation and essential characteristics could be investigated. To date this is the only source, which is equipped with all components and operated at a linear accelerator.
