Abstract: Cephalocarids (horseshoe shrimp) are a fascinating group of marine crustaceans. Here the morphology and development of their nervous system was investigated combining modern and traditional methods, allowing for a well-founded morphological comparison across arthropods. Some complex neuroanatomical features of cephalocarids are absent in other crustaceans, but do occur in more distantly-related arthropods. In this new light, former hypotheses on the evolution of the arthropod nervous system were revised throughout. The thesis includes four manuscripts in English and a review in German.
