Abstract: The alkaline phosphatase activity (AlkPA) has been used in aquatic ecology since the 1970s as an indicator of phosphorus limitation in phytoplankton communities. The indicator function is based on the fact that many phytoplankton species induce the synthesis of alkaline phosphatases under low phosphate concentrations. In this dissertation, the indicator function was reassessed on the basis of three ecologically very different bodies of water. Recommendations are given on how the AlkPA measurements should be done to minimize misinterpretations of the results.
